Stockton is steeped in history.  It all started with the gold rush of the mid-1800s.  Scores of those who rushed in to pan for gold stayed and set up housekeeping in Stockton.  The many waterways that make up the California Delta were used to bring supplies to local gold mining communities.  When the gold rush ended in 1855, the focus turned to the growing and transport of the city’s vast supply of agriculture due to the fertile farmland that surrounds Stockton.  At the end of the 19^th century, Stockton was transformed into a significant industrial and transportation center, and, finally, to the busy commercial port it remains today.  Stockton, California, seated on the San Joaquin River, is the state’s largest inland seaport.

The city still holds much of its history.  From the Bank of Italy, to the Locke House and Barn, to the Temporary Detention Camps for Japanese Americans, to the Wood’s Ferry and Bridge, historic sites and markers can be seen throughout the city.

Stockton hosts several public school districts and boasts a variety of prestigious private schools, along with several colleges and universities.  The University of the Pacific Campus has been used as a backdrop in many Hollywood films due to its similarity to Ivy League schools on the east coast, including the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
