Raleigh was established as the capital of North Carolina and the county seat for Wake County in 1792. It is named after Sir Walter Raleigh. The city is known for its many oak trees, and the city’s symbol is the acorn. Its population is estimated at 385,507, the 2nd largest in the state behind Charlotte.
