Just like its motto mentions, the town is literally located in the heart of the Green Mountains. Killington is a curious town, for sure. Its citizens have voted twice to secede from Vermont and join New Hampshire just 25 miles east of the city. The hubbub was all over a perception of inequity in taxes versus services received from the state.

Founded in 1761, the city was originally named Killington. It changed its name to Sherburne in 1800 in honor of the one of the town’s original founders. Visitors caused such a consistent commotion over the years assuming that the name of the town would be the same as the ski resort in the area. They did not know to look for the name Sherburne. The constant confusion sparked the change in the name of the town, and it reverted back to its former Killington in March of 1999.

With a population of just under 1,100, you’d think there would not be much to do in Killington. On the contrary, don’t let its size fool you! As tiny as this town is, two of the state’s most popular ski resorts call this city home - Pico Ski Resort and Killington Ski Resort. These aren’t your mama’s ski resorts, either. These are world class resorts and often see more than 17,000 visitors in one day!

Killington is the largest ski resort in eastern North America and offers year-round recreation. In 2007, Golf Digest ranked Green Mountain National Golf Course 1st on their list of public golf courses in Vermont. The course is located just minutes from Killington Ski Resort.

Both the Appalachian Trail and the Long Trail wind through Killington. Some of the most scenic part of the Appalachian Trail is found right here, notably at Thundering Falls, which makes for a popular place for hiking, weekend stays and back packing.

You will be in awe of all the activities available in Killington. For summer fun, you can watch a movie while you swim at Splash Theater. The Ottauquechee River originates in Killington and is a great source for whitewater rafting and kayaking. Take in one in a series of concerts from famous artists at the Shelburne Memorial Library. Send the kids to Camp Loads of Fun, Jr. Adventure Camp, Rek & Trek Adventure Camp, Major League Soccer Camp or “Top Spin” Tennis Camp.

For amazing mountain side fun, the Killington/Pico Ski Resort provides a plethora of activity. Tee off at Killington Mountain Golf Course, or take a “peak” into the Pico Adventure Center for wall climbing, Alpine slides, the Pico Power Jump or mini golf. A multitude of other adventures are at your beck and call like hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, gondola rides, and an antique car show. Attend the Killington Wine Festival, Discover Jazz Festival or Kid’s Pirate Festival. Looking for a run? Annual Bridges Half-Marathon is just up your alley. You’ll find plenty of businesses and sources for jobs in the area. The city hosts one elementary school. Woodstock Union High School & Middle School provides education for Killington’s middle and high schoolers.
